In this 3-part interview, Guy and Matt allow us to get to know them a little bit a whole lot better. In Part 1, these gentlemen bare their souls and share their innermost thoughts. Part 2 focuses on the River Ties project itself and the logistics and funding (and why the project is on Indiegogo). And we wrap everything in Part 3 with Matt and Guy sharing their river expertise and tips to help you decide if you want to embark on a river adventure.
Meet Guy Giamo-McClung and Matt Kocourek.
HCRB: With 5 adjectives, describe yourself.
Guy: Boisterous, jocular, lithe, plucky, ginger.
Matt: Tenacious, amiable, ambitious, old-soul, lean.
HCRB: If money were no object and you hosted a premiere party for River Ties, what food are you serving and what two bands are playing music?
Guy: Burgers and brats and right now, probably Alt J and Ellie Goulding.
Matt: We will even add the sand to your burger or brat to get the true river experience.
HCRB: Okay, so really, when and where is the premiere party and should we bring hummus?
Guy: The premiere will be at the Springfield Brew Co in February though we’re anxious to find a venue for a showing in KC! Hummus is never inappropriate.
HCRB: Did you drink from the Green River?
Guy: We actually carried all the water we would need in plastic jerry cans, but we would if we had to.
HCRB: Did you pee in the Green River?
Matt: Every time.
Guy: You HAVE TO pee in the green river, its required! No peeing on the bank, it’s a desert man.
HCRB: What is your favorite food to take on outdoor adventures?
Guy: Snickers.
Matt: Pistachios (the Crack Cocaine of Nuts)
HCRB: What 3 pieces of gear do you take on all of your outdoor adventures?
Guy: Rainshell, sunglasses, sunscreen
Matt: Chacos, sunglasses, a camera
HCRB: You have to live outside for a year, where are you living?
Guy: Colorado
Matt: The Olympic peninsula (Washington State)
HCRB: When did you fall in love with rivers / river trips?
Guy: When I was a kid on my parents’ 4th of July employee float trips with all their inebriated bar employees.
Matt: Actually this was my first substantial river trip, so I guess last fall.
HCRB: Rank in order of enjoyment and why: Mountains, Snow, River, Traffic, Wal-mart.
Guy: 1. Rivers, nearest and dearest to my heart. 2. Mountains, the only playground you could need. 3. Snow, preferably in the mountains, descending is the same as on water, just frozen. 4. Traffic, gives you time to think. 5. Traffic again, because I hate Wal-mart that much!
Matt: 1. Snow, I love snow and cold temperatures. 2. Mountains – refer to answer one. 3. Rivers, my latest hobby. 4 and 5. Wal-mart & Traffic – no explanation necessary.
HCRB: How much sunscreen will be used in the production of River Ties?
Guy: All I’m saying is that we should be sponsored by Coppertone.
HCRB: If the moon were made of BBQ spare ribs, would you eat it?
Guy: Is there anyone who wouldn’t? Tides be damned.
Matt: Love me some spare ribs!
HCRB: What one thing will you never eat? Ok, will you eat it for $1000?
Guy: Mustard… I’d probably do a lot more for 1000 bucks.
Matt: Lutefisk…it is fish cured in Lye. It has the consistency of jellied pickled fish. You pony up the cash and we shall see.
HCRB: What one homemade food are you the best in the world at making?
Guy: Let’s be honest, none.
HCRB: Name the beer that you are enjoying most right now.
Guy: Trying not to think about beer much lately as I recently discovered I can’t have gluten anymore… tragic really.
Matt: Anything Dark & Malty
HCRB: Would you go over Niagara Falls in a high-tech whiskey barrel?
Guy: Only if I had been the one to empty the barrel.
Matt: Yeah I am game. When are we going?
This concludes Part 1 of the Guy and Matt River Ties project interview. Look for Part 2 and Part 3 in the coming days…
