How To Kill The Alligator Belay Technique

September 15, 2016 by Jason Clements

How To Kill The Alligator Belay TechniqueWhen I posted my How To Not Die At 24 Hours Of Horseshoe Hell article, the number one question I received was:

Then what is the correct belay method, Jason?

So I made, probably, the most important climbing video of 2016.  In it, I show you how to kill the Alligator Belay Technique.

The most important point of this series of articles and this video

is that there is a defined moment (I call it the Danger Moment) when you are lead belaying and if these 3 things happen right at the moment that your partner yells “TAKE” or “ON YOU” and you begin to pull slack.

  1. If your muscle memory reverts back to the dangerous alligator belay method;
  2. and your hands meet above your head;
  3. and your climber weighs the rope…

…then you have a gigantic potential for a ground fall.  This is exactly what I witnessed and describe in the How Not To Die…article.

So, for those of you who are serious about improving your belay technique, I give you How To Kill The Alligator Belay Technique.

These 6 minutes just might save you and your climbing partners from injury or worse.

Learn a whole lot more about staying safe in the HCRBeta Injury Prevention Section.

How To Not Die At 24 Hours Of Horseshoe Hell

September 12, 2016 by Jason Clements

How to not die at 24 hours of horseshoe hell rope burnI was a volunteer at the 24 Hours of Horseshoe Hell and saw many climbers ignore basic safety and common sense. With that amount of blatant disregard for safety, the clock is ticking and time will run out.  Hopefully this article will teach you how to not die at 24 Hours of Horseshoe Hell.  (Don’t get injured either.)

No matter how smart, talented or capable you are, gravity weighs upon all of us equally.  The universe does not care how long you have climbed or whether or not you kinda sorta hang out with an F-level celebrity in your local climbing community.

Before you stop thinking and knee-jerk yourself with the standard: “Jason, you’re just a party pooper.” Keep in mind, I witnessed these dangerous actions over and over while I was a volunteer.  And, I am not the only one.  Many other climbers who have volunteered have stated the exact same thing: “I saw someone at the third bolt and the belay wasn’t on!”

Today’s Article Will Encourage You To Stay Safe And Help You NOT DIE (or get injured) At 24 Hours Of Horseshoe Hell.

This article is for new climbers, who have never “endurance climbed” and who are psyched to test their limit.  To you I say, “Good luck!”  and  “Stay safe.”

This article is not for those of you who already know everything about climbing because you climb 5.12ish (a few times, indoors) and FA’ed a bunch of stuff near Acapulco.  If you have been climbing for 10+ years, and you are important because you just might be the one F-level celebrity in your community; you can go pour yourself a nice tall glass of I-don’t-want-you-on-my-website.  To you I say: “Go eat a soft boiled egg.”  and “Tick tock.”

(* And yes, I have met many very strong and famous climbers and most are cool, kind, and easy going.  Not all of them are bad eggs.)

You Will Be Climbing At Your Physical Limit While Dehydrated, Sleep-Deprived And In The Dark

Remind yourself, right now, about all of your personal limits and how strictly you will adhere to the very basic rules of climbing.  This will help you avoid injury.

Don’t skip bolts.  Don’t allow your climbing partner to skip bolts.  Wait to hear that, “Belay is on!”  Then climb.  (Is it too harsh to think that if a climber skips bolts or doesn’t wait for their belay to be on – and they get injured – is it too harsh to think that they deserved it?) The Best Videos That Benefit The Kansas City Climbing Community

February 18, 2016 by Jason Clements

The Best Videos That Benefit The Kansas City Climbing Community 02.16Here are the best videos that benefit the Kansas City climbing community.  Take a quick look ESPECIALLY if you are brand new to hiking, climbing, or camping.

I don’t claim to be an expert at anything.  These are the strategies that I use.  I’ve taken what I’ve learned from my own experiences and from talking to dozens of my fellow climbers; and put together these videos.  You will come to discover that some of the best members of your climbing community are always learning new ideas and tips – and improving themselves – and they ultimately share their best-practice ideas.

My way is not necessarily better than another way.  Take what you want.  Skip what doesn’t work for you.  And you can share your best tips in the comments here or on the YouTube videos.

No Loose Chalk

Do you ever see signs posted in your gym that say, “NO LOOSE CHALK.”  What that means is they do no want you to pour your climbing chalk into your chalk bag while at the gym.  Your gym wants you to use a chalk ball.

The employees of your climbing gym have plenty of responsibilities – like keeping you safe (and the new climbers safe) giving beta, fixing spinners, getting your friends some rental gear, etc.  The last thing you want those employees spending time on is cleaning up your chalk spill.

How To Fill Your Chalk Ball The Quick and Easy Way (3:45)

Finger Injuries…Noooooooo!!!

You’ve got to try Voodoo Flossing on your fingers, wrists, elbows, shoulders.  It works on sore forearms and sore calves.  I’ve heard stories of seriously sprained ankles healing in a day or two.  Sure, I am not a doctor; and yes, every body is different.  But the stories I keep hearing give me great pause: “Is this really a tool that everyone should experiment with…”

Here’s How to Voodoo Floss Your Fingers (2:15)

How much did your tent cost?  How much did your sleeping bag cost?

Yeah, those are quite the investment.  And just like all of your climbing gear, you can perform some very simple maintenance on your soft gear (tents, sleeping bags, etc.) to help extend their life.

Here’s How to Store Your Expensive Sleeping Bag (1:09)

Here’s How to Store Your Tent For The Winter (1:45)

Bathroom.  Yes, we have to talk about pooping in the woods.

Depending on where you are going, (ha ha, get it: “going”) you will have to know the rules for managing your waste.  Some climbing places have full facilities – like they have at Horseshoe Canyon Ranch.  Some other climbing destinations only have pit toilets – like at Sam’s Throne.  And some places you are going to have to dig a hole to do your stuff.

Pro Tip:  If you have to dig a hole; dig it at least as deep as your trowel is long.

Here is How I Build My Ultimate Poop / Toilet Kit. (2:25)

If you are a part of the Kansas City climbing community or any other climbing community, thank you for watching.  Please share your tips and ideas in the comment section here or on YouTube.

Enjoy your next adventure!

Meet Richard Lonski: Rock Climber, Martial Artist, CFO of DGS Games

October 21, 2015 by Jason Clements

Richard Lonski has one of the biggest, kindest, warmest hearts I know. Dude is solid.

Richard started rock climbing when he was in his 40’s and dropped 50 pounds!  Talk about being an inspiration.  He is the CFO of DGS Games.  And, he knows how to kick ass–is one of only a few teachers of a martial art called Shinwa Taido.

Ladies and Gentlemen, meet Richard Lonski.

Meet Richard LonskiGet to know Richard in 15 seconds:

Scariest situation you’ve ever been in – doesn’t have to be climbing related:

• Wow….things got real fast. It was a situation I don’t think I’ve ever told anyone about. I was in high school and was sexually assaulted by a much larger/older co-worker.

[Please, if you or someone you know needs help:  Call 800.656.HOPE (4673)]

If you were only allowed one specific type and brand of alcohol / cocktail for one Richard Lonski Enjoying the Campfireyear, what would you choose?

• Easy….whiskey.  Pretty much all I drink now.  Bourbon or Scotch neat.  There is nothing better on a cold night around a campfire.

What are three things you eat on a regular basis?

• Spinach, hummus and peanut butter

The last good book you read was:

• That’s hard, I don’t read nearly as much as I used to…..so, how about the book that had the most impact on my life. The Tao of Physics by Fritjof Capra. I’ve owned it 3 times and given them all away. Been meaning to buy my 4th copy.

What music or a song you listen to over and over right now?

• While I have about a dozen Pandora stations, I keep coming back to Cake, Walk off the Earth and Billie Holiday depending on my mood.

If space tourism become available in our lifetime, are you going to the Moon or Mars? Why?

• Easy. Mars. I wrote a research paper on the feasibility of colonizing Mars in High school.  I have always been a nerd; and that created a bit of a fascination with the planet and the possibilities it represents.
