May 24, 2022 by Jason Clements

35 Strategies For A More Enjoyable Hiking Climbing Or Camping TripThese strategies come from the climbing community.  Kansas City, Denver, Boulder, Providence, Harrison, Salt Lake City, are represented.  Look for the artist, the adventurer, the high-rise window cleaner and the photographer.  Who are the entrepreneurs, retail store managers, and gym owners?

I’ve compiled 35 of the very best strategies to help you have a more enjoyable hiking, climbing, or camping trip.

Obviously, things can go wrong or be less than perfect on any given trip.  What would happen if you picked up one or more of these strategies to share on your next outdoor adventure.  Can you…

35 Strategies For A More Enjoyable Hiking Climbing Or Camping Trip

HCRB: What are two things that anyone can do to help ensure an enjoyable outdoor adventure?

Guy:  Make good decisions and share the experience with friends.

This is Matt.Matt:  Relax and live in the moment.

HCRB:  Every climber should know…

Deulen Chillin 2Chris: 1. Learn what spray* means.

2. Leave no trace.

3. Treat all people with respect and empathy.

HCRB:  What makes a climbing trip perfect for you?

David Tindle Owner Stength LabDavid: Friends…climbing is such a social sport. I love sitting under a boulder problem philosophizing about life all day and enjoying nature. Everything in life is more fun with friends.

HCRB:  What are two things that make an outdoor adventure perfect for you?

Alex on Ozark TrailAlex: Big fires and good friends.  Those are really the only things I can think of.  Everything else just makes the story better.  If you run into bad weather – well, you are going to have a better story.  The only thing that matters is that the person I am with is experiencing the same thing I am.  And there is just something about sitting next to a big fire sharing those experiences with others.

HCRB: What makes an outdoor trip perfect for you?

Paul PickellPaul:  Not putting expectations on the trip — just enjoying what may happen.

HCRB:  List three tips for someone just starting out rock climbing or bouldering?

Meet Kevin BrownKevin:  Have fun, wear comfortable shoes and climb with fun people.

HCRB: What 3 quick suggestions do you have for a new hiker or climber?

Matt BoultonMatt: 1. Don’t…..ever….give….up. Though it may seem hard right now it surely will get easier.

2. Bringing a great attitude will get you through any situation.

3. You’re not lost it just took you longer to get there

HCRB:  Give a beginner (new at climbing, hiking, camping) 3 tips for enjoying a first outside adventure:

Grace Cockram SunshineGracey: 1. You must bring:  A great attitude and an open mind

2. You must remember to:  Slow down, watch the sites, take it all in! It’s about the journey!

3. You should never:  Take a selfie with a bear. Or an elk.

HCRB:  Give 3 tips to someone just getting started with going outside.

Craig Muderlak in the BugaboosCraig: 1. Stay hydrated.

2. Prepare -some 1st aid training and do adequate research on where you’re going and what you need to know.

3. Enjoy the night sky.

HCRB: What words of wisdom can you share about relaxing and enjoying the outdoors?

Amanda Smith and Chad WatkinsAmanda: Be present in what you are doing. Try to let the past go and stop worrying about the future. Enjoy what is going on at the moment.

HCRB:  Give us 3 tips on how to relax and enjoy an adventure when things aren’t perfect…(like bad weather, broken gear, or lost luggage.)

Jake Anderson of Hobo Hammocks Hiking and PointingJake: 1. Avoid having expectations – There are so many things in this world we can’t control. You can only be let down if you have certain expectations in the first place. If you’re going on an adventure, then just let it be an adventure!  The greatest memories come from when things DON’T go according to plan.

2. Turn it into a joke – Everything is funny. You just have to choose to see it that way! I remember one time my family was on a river rafting trip in Moab. While we were sleeping, somebody came and stole our breakfast food. My mom, instead of being upset, couldn’t stop laughing. She thought it was absolutely hilarious that another tour group would break through our camp in the middle of the night and steal our breakfast. It took about a half hour before she could even construct a sentence because she was laughing so hard. That’s how you should live life my friends!

3. Perspective – Sometimes we tend to make a big deal out of things that are not a big deal. If something bad happens, recognize that it’s not really that bad. Because no matter what the weather is, or what you broke or lost, you’re doing something you love, probably with people you love. Focus on that.

HCRB:  When life weighs you down (during an expedition or in everyday living), how do you find that spark inside of you to keep going?

Meet Renan OzturkRenan:  My battery can run pretty low sometimes. Having a restful home is really helpful, but often the spark is reignited every time I get back into the mountains. Expeditions both wear me out, and reinvigorate me, every time.

I think when you are feeling weighed down, you actually have to go back and do the thing again that wore you down in the first place, so long as it was something you loved.

Good coffee helps too.

* Spray: Unsolicited beta; not always unappreciated, but usually inappropriate. It can take a lot of self-awareness/control to refrain from doing this, but I believe to do so creates a better environment for everyone. Climbing at its core is problem solving. What fun is it if someone solves your problem for you, especially if you didn’t ask them to?
