Rock Climbing in Kansas: Mushroom Rock State Park

September 16, 2015 by Jason Clements

Rock Climbing In Kansas Mushroom State ParkIf you are a rock climber or boulderer driving west on I-70, on your way to Colorado, you should plan to stop at Mushroom Rock State Park.  Mushroom Rock State Park has the most unique boulders in the state of Kansas.

The rock formations are other-worldly.  There is a true sense of awe here.  How did these sandstone mushrooms appear In the middle of a Kansas prairie?

Take time to think quietly here.  Take the time to relax.

Planning Your Stop At Mushroom Rock State Park From Kansas City

Heading west on 1-70, take the I-135 south exit.  After a few miles, head west again on Hwy 140 for about 20 miles.  Take the 25th Rd exit South.  Then find Ave K and head East.  Look for the Mushroom Rock Formations and you are there.

There are bathrooms here; so this could be your first pit-stop if you are driving out of Kansas City.  There is a small shelter.

Bouldering at Mushroom Rock State Park

This may be the best outdoor rock climbing in Kansas.  Without a doubt, this will be the most unique bouldering that you will ever do.

All of the landings are flat, so bring your bouldering pads and bring your spotters.

This is sandstone.  I did not see any choss or pieces or piles of rock.

It was the deep carvings in the pillars that made me wary.  Could this sandstone soften up after rain?  I don’t know.  So make sure you have pad and spotters.  There is no reason to ruin your Colorado trip by injuring yourself at Mushroom Rocks.

I did see a lot of poison ivy.  Be on the lookout.

The solemnity of this landscape will speak to you.  The ancient and/or modern hieroglyphs will also speak to you.  It is fascinating to see what people chose to carve…to leave as their visiting legacy.

I wonder if anyone has studied or documented the changes to the carvings on these pillars over time.
