REI’s #OptOutside Marketing Stunt is a Fail
Do you need a megastore telling you to #OptOutside?
REI, with $2.2 BILLION in sales in 2014, is a retail monster. They are in the same class as Worst Buy, Gall-Mart and the rest of their ilk.
So, go ahead, REI, give yourself a high-five.

Better Strategies for REI: Making a TRUE Difference in People’s Lives:
- Donate all profits from Black Friday sales to a charity, homeless shelter, food kitchen, etc.
- For every coat purchased at full price, REI donates a coat to a homeless shelter.
- Instead of Toys for Tots barrels at the front of each REI store; have a Hats, Scarves, Gloves, Mittens barrel to collect for those children less fortunate in their respective cities.
- Have employees take the day off and have option to volunteer at a charity of their choice…and still get paid.
- Open your new locations 100 miles away from local, independent outdoor gear shops.

REI’s 143 Stores Will Be Closed the Day After Thanksgiving
Who cares! It doesn’t matter. There is still going to be headache-inducing traffic in their strip malls. There is still going to be consumer chaos and riots at their sister-mega stores.
This is nothing more than a short-lived, poorly planned attempt to grab goodwill from people who already disdain the grotesqueness of holiday shopping.
Those who want to shop will want to shop.
That outdoor money is going to be spent somewhere. Your diehard REI shoppers will shop a day earlier or a day later. Your accountants know the numbers.
This move is not going to influence consumers. Consumers consume. Let them.
REI, you are a retail store. You get to behave like a retail store. Go ahead and stay open.

People Who Truly #OptOutside are Going Outside Anyway
This goodwill seeking deed will make the news today and maybe tomorrow. Then, we’ll be reminded again as we get closer to Thanksgiving and Black Friday. Blech!
You won’t lose any sleep, Ron Friedman. Your accountants know the numbers.
Those of us who want to get outside will get outside.
…we’ll sleep under the stars.
