I have always maintained that buying gear from your friend’s shops makes it a more enjoyable experience. Add that degree of trust, and you walk out of the store feeling like you just made a purchase of a lifetime! So, let’s make some friends: Meet Beau Belger.
Beau is one of the managers at Moosejaw on the Plaza where he works with Gracey Cockram.
When you meet Beau, ask him about how in the world he enjoys the cold weather!
Ladies and Gentlemen: Meet Beau Belger.

HCRB: What is your favorite outdoor activity?
Beau: My favorite outdoor activity is Outdooring, which I define as the act of being out of doors. I am a big fan of pretty much anything I can do in the great outdoors.
HCRB: What is your go-to drink in the winter? …after a workout? …when relaxing?
Beau: My favorite drink, honestly this answer holds true for all three: Coffee.
HCRB: Best book you’ve read in the last year? …best movie?
Beau: The best book I read was The First Law trilogy by Joe Abercrombie. I’d say the best movie I saw this year was the Revenant
HCRB: One place you want to travel to, that you haven’t yet? …why?
Beau: I am in the process of formulating a plan to fly into Santiago Chile buy a bike and take 6 months riding through the Andes and some wonderful wine country. Make my way down to Patagonia climb my little heart out find a way onto a fishing vessel that would take me around the Tierra del Fuego archipelago and work my way up the Argentine coast to Buenos Aries.
I think the only “why” question i need to answer here would be why haven’t I done it yet, which I can only answer by saying; school.
HCRB: Alright, Beau, why should we stop into Moosejaw to meet you?
Beau: I love to be outside and hear other people’s experiences in the outdoors. I come to work looking forward to helping people out, but what excites me even more is learning something from customers. Please come in and teach me something.
HCRB: What is the best / most useful item that you have purchased from Moosejaw?
Beau: I’d say the most used item I purchased at Moosejaw was a osprey pack. I purchased it before I started with the company I’ve used it almost every day. I don’t own a car so I bike everywhere I go, and every time I hope on the ol’ bike; the pack comes with me.
HCRB: Name one piece of outdoor gear that you could get cheaper at Target or (shudder) Wal-mart?
Beau: I’d say food. We do have the lightest meals because they are professionally freeze dried, but you can definitely save some dollars going elsewhere for food. Just, whatever you do, don’t buy powdered eggs. They’re so far from scrambled eggs I have a hard time calling them by the same name.
HCRB: Name one piece of outdoor gear that you must get from Moosejaw or another reliable outdoor shop?
Beau: The more extreme the activity the more the gear becomes necessary. So I would say the most important things would be gear you trust your life to. Rock climbing gear and cold weather gear are two that come to mind. But I buy everything from Moosejaw; and I always tell my fiance that it’s essential.
HCRB: What is the best outdoor adventure you’ve ever had? …why?
Beau: When backpacking in Yellow River Forest a friend and I were talking about what kind of bears we would be as we looked up at a wonderfully clear night. He drifted off to sleep and started growling, at first very soft, but over time it grew into a full blown bear growl. I silently laughed to myself while staring up at the stars trying to find Ursa Major.
HCRB: Give three tips to a beginner for enjoying the outdoors.
Beau:
1. Most importantly – smile – I’ve had experiences outside that I wouldn’t classify as the most fun, but smiling through the pain almost always made it better.
2. Take water – I love water and my doctor says it’s necessary to live.
3. Don’t expect every experience to be life changing.
