Best Hammock for a Beginner Hobo Hammock vs ENO Hammock

October 16, 2015 by Jason Clements

Best Hammock for a Beginner

Which is the best hammock for a beginner?  Hobo Hammock vs. ENO Hammock

I am a tent camper who is also a fan of hammock camping.  However, I really hate bugs–especially in the summer.  I hate mosquitoes, gnats, and grasshoppers.  I’ve had a grasshopper startle me awake–landing on my face.  Nope and double nope!  I need my tent to block out the bugs.  But in early spring or in late fall, when there are no bugs to gang up on me while I sleep, I completely enjoy sleeping in my hammock.

Eye Bolt for HammockI went to The Outdoor Gear Lab and looked at how they rated hammocks.  To my eyes, all of the specs of those hammocks look about the same.  Yes, all hammocks are different; yet they are all so similar.

There are thousands of hammock reviews online, so I am not going to write about the specs and breakdown each hammock.  My experience suggests that hammock reviews get way too complicated, especially for a climber/camper like myself.  If you disagree, post up your comment telling me why.  I’m far from an expert. How To Store Your Tent For The Winter

October 5, 2015 by Jason Clements

How Do You Store Your Tent For The Winter

How To Store Your Tent For The Winter ( Video Link Below )

The Quick Answer:

  • Make certain that your tent is 100% dry
  • Keep tent, rainfly, poles, stakes, guy-lines, and stuff sack together
  • Hang everything up in your closet
  • Enjoy a fresh tent on your first spring trip

How Do You Currently Store Your Tent?

Do you keep your tent in the stuff sack all winter long?

Do you ever wonder to yourself, “what is that funky smell,” during your first spring trip–after your tent has been crammed in its stuff sack all winter long?

Are you sneezy or congested while you sleep in your tent?

That smell could be mold or mildew.  The smallest amount of moisture can cause mold or mildew to grow on your tent.  It can also lead to some degradation of the waterproof properties of your tent.

How To Build The Ultimate Wash Station For Car Camping

August 4, 2015 by Jason Clements

How To Build The Ultimate Wash Station For Car Camping

In this article, you will learn how to quickly and easily build the ultimate wash station for car camping.  This will work to wash your hands and your dishes.  You should try it out on your next outdoor adventure.  This wash station works best for car camping.  And if your car will be your home base, this station will work for hiking, climbing, and any other outdoor activity.

This style of wash station is quick, easy, and one-hand operational.  Once you try it, you’ll take it on all of your outdoor trips.

Wash Station for Car CampingWater Container

For my first Wash Station, I used an old Tide Laundry Soap container.  It took me many rinses to clear out the detergent residue.  And for the first few times of using container, it still had a faint smell of detergent.  I even wrote “WASH HANDS & DISHES ONLY” on the side so that no one would mistakenly drink this water.Water Jug as a Washing Station for Car Camping

Now that I’ve used it so many times, there is no soap smells.

But if you are not comfortable with re-using a laundry soap container, just buy a jug made for this exact purpose.  Most grocery stores are going to carry a similar style to the one pictured here.  If you can’t find one, Coleman makes on that is very affordable.

The Best DIY Fire Starter For Camping: Super Quick and Easy Part 1

May 24, 2014 by Jason Clements

This is a two part article with an accompanying video that shows:

1.  How to make the Best DIY Fire Starter for camping (Scroll all the way to the bottom of this article for the 1:34 instructional video.)

2.  How the Best DIY Fire Starter for camping works when wood, tinder, and everything is soaking wet. (Video:  Coming Soon.  First experiment worked!)

To make the Best DIY fire starter, you’ll need:

  • Any Egg Carton made from recycled or reclaimed paper.  Do not use Styrofoam or plastic egg containers.  They smell terrible when on fire and it is not good for the environment.
  • Paraffin wax.  You should have this in your house if someone does manicures or pedicures.  It is also common for arthritis sufferers to use paraffin for pain relief.  If not, you can find it in the canning section at any grocery story, hardware store or Amazon.com.
  • Lint.  If you have a dryer, you’ll have an ample, year-round supply of lint.
  • Pine cone.  This is my special addition.  I think it makes the starter burn a little hotter which may come in handy during wet or damp camp fire situations. (¹)
  • Dental floss.  Really, you can use just about any cotton string or anything similar.  The floss holds your fire starter together and is how you dip the dry fire starter into the paraffin wax.
