You are about to learn how to make pizza while you are in the wild.  Use this Car Camping Pizza technique anytime you are camping, hiking, or climbing near your car.

Here’s the video first.  Detailed notes are below the video.

Details For Making The Best Car Camping Pizza

Coleman Stove is better for Car Camping PizzaStove Selection:

It makes sense to me to use the Coleman stove instead of my Snow Peak pocket stove. The Coleman stove has a larger and more stable surface to accommodate a larger pan.  It is a balancing act to use a big pan over the Snow Peak or Pocket Rocket.  I am not saying that it is not possible to use a small stove.  You just need a flat, solid surface so you don’t knock over your pan.

8 inch pan for Car Camping PizzaPan Selection:

I have only used a non-stick pan with a stainless lid.  Use your cast iron skillet if that is what you normally use for car camping.  The most important idea to remember is for your tortilla shells to fit nicely inside of your pan.  If your tortilla shells are bigger than your pan, your are going to have an extra step in trimming the tortilla – pain in the butt.  Just get the right size tortilla to match your pan.

Utensils:

Utensils for Car Camping PizzaIf you are a camper, hiker, or climber; you should already have the utensils you need to make car camping pizza.  As you see in the video, I prepare all of my pizzas first, and then cook them one at a time.  I don’t bring a pizza cutter because each pizza is a single serving.  I reckon if you have a bigger pan and bigger tortilla shell, it will make sense to pack a pizza cutter.

Pizza Sauce

Make fresh pizza sauce before you leave on your trip.  This is my family’s recipe for the very best pizza sauce that you will ever taste.  Sure, you can purchase something pre-made in a jar; but why?  This pizza sauce takes about 5 minutes to make!

Pizza Sause Recipe for Car Camping PizzaIn a magic bullet container, mix:

  • 1 can (14 – 17 oz) whole peeled or diced tomatoes
  • 1 tsp minced garlic (fresh is best, dry is ok)
  • 1 Tbsp minced onion (fresh is best, dry is ok)
  • 1 Tbsp oregano
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp crushed red pepper
  • 1/4 olive oil
  • Adjust spices for your preferences.
  • Blend all ingredients except oil until smooth. Add oil last.
  • Store the pizza sauce in any container that you normally take with you on a trip.

Toppings

You know what you like…bring it all.  One tip:  Don’t pile on the toppings.  If the toppings are thick, you may get a burned tortilla shell before all of cheese is melted and the toppings are heated thoroughly.

Car Camping Pizza 3 Pizzas assembledCertainly a power bar has its place on your camping menu.  And you can never go wrong with trail mix.  However, after a long hike or a strenuous climbing session, being able to eat pizza during an outdoor trip might be one of the most enjoyable meals you may ever have.

Bon Appetit!
