Can I Eat Salsa On My Diet

  • “Can I eat salsa on my diet?”(1)
  • “Oh, I could never give up my __________”
  • “They won’t let me eat avocados.”
  • “I only have to give up sugar for three days.”
  • “I’ll try it for a week and see how it goes.”
  • “I read an article that says you can still drink beer and lose weight.”

Introduction To X-Order Terms And How It Relates To Your Salsa

First-order, second-order, third-order…one hundredth-order…

This is one way to describe importance or requirements of a process.  Let’s use the example of setting up camp at night.  The first-order term could be to locate your headlamp.  The second-order term could be to scout out a flat area for your tent and then clear rocks and sticks away.  The third-order term might be to collect firewood and get yourself warm.  Probably everyone loves guitar music around a campfire, but locating your guitar in the Jeep is probably a tenth-order term.  Get it?  How important is that specific step in the process?  That is the x-order term.

Getting steps out of order or prioritizing the wrong term, can lead to trouble.  Wondering around a new campsite in the dark with no headlamp can lead to problems like tripping, stumbling, getting lost, etc.  You are understanding it.  Terms are a simple idea, so let’s get back to salsa…

…if salsa is the first question you ask about a diet (because you LOOOOVE <3 x 10 salsa), then you will run into problems on your diet and probably fail.  And your failure is going to be because you don’t have your terms in order.

No One But YOU Knows What Your First-Order Term Should Be

I am not a psychology expert.  I do not understand humans and their relationship with food, marketing, addictions, habits, or change.  So, I have no clue as to what YOUR first-order term should be.  This is why n=1 is so important.  And, this is why the vast majority of the planet fails on their diets.  They allow someone else to set the first-order term. Bully 2 [example:  Nutritional Ketosis works for me.  I have no idea if it works for you.  I would be an absolute bully if I blindly assumed that, because it works for me, it should work for you.  The same goes for paleo, vegetarian, vegan, bananas, protein power, etc.]  No one but you will ultimately find out what works for you.  It should be clearer to see now that self-experimentation is the key.

A Tiny Change In The Questions You Ask Yourself May Lead You To Success

What would happen if you had a long conversation with yourself?  What would you find out about YOU?  What motivates you?  What do you want to accomplish with your health now and in the future?  What is at the deepest part of who you are?  Can you keep promises to yourself?  (I wonder if this should be the first-order term for most folks struggling to accomplish their diet and exercise goals.)

The phrases below are the ones I hear from those who have some successes in their diet and exercise.  Feel free to borrow any of them and make them your own.

  • “I will find out what works for me.”
  • “I will see how my body responds to salsa or alcohol or _______.”
  • “I have two more weeks of data to collect.”
  • “I am feeling a little more _________ since cutting ________ out of my diet.”
  • “I am going to add back _________ to my diet and see how my body responds.”
  • “Oh, how human of me.  I ate 16 cookies that my daughter made last night.  That’s is okay.  I can re-commit to my goals pretty easily.  I will be back on track tomorrow.”

Welcome To The World Of Intelligent And Responsible Self-Experimentation

The guiding principles that has worked for me when I have been successful in self-experimentation are:

  1. Commitment
  2. Attention
  3. Adjustments
  4. New Goals

Stay tuned to the details of how I used those 4 guiding principles to lose 20 pounds of fat and gain 7 pounds of muscle. And how I went from climbing V2 to V6 boulder problems.

Happy Health!
