September 8, 2015 by Jason Clements

Enjoy Bacon on Your Next Camping TripCamping and Bacon

Bacon lovers who camp and climb, listen up.  This is the ultimate tutorial on camping and bacon.  You will learn how to take bacon with you on each and every camping, climbing and hiking trip you will take in the future.

Never again will you have to take that pre-cooked, withered, limp, over-priced bacon with you on any outdoor adventure.  From now on, you’ll take freshly cooked, high-quality bacon.

And If you always cook bacon on your camping or climbing trips; consider this technique.  You may save substantial clean-up time, allowing you to enjoy more of your outdoor trip without the hassle of bacon clean up.

If you cook your bacon at home, before your trip, you won’t have to deal with:

  • How do you take raw bacon with you on a trip?
  • What do you do with the bacon grease?
  • Can I just toss the bacon grease on the ground?
  • How do I clean up my bacon pan?

Part 1:  Choose and Cook Your Bacon

Buy quality bacon or thick cut bacon.  Don’t buy the thinnest, cheapest stuff.

Watch this 36 second video that will teach you how to cook consistent, perfect bacon.

Part 2:  Package Your Bacon

Camping and Bacon Packaging Step 1 Camping and Bacon Packaging Step 2 Camping and Bacon Packaging Step 3 Camping and Bacon Packaging Step 4 Camping and Bacon Packaging Step 5 Camping and Bacon Packaging Step 6 Camping and Bacon Packaging Step 7 Camping and Bacon Packaging Step 8 Camping and Bacon Packaging Step 9 Camping and Bacon Packaging Step 10Step 1.  You’ll need Paper Towels, Ziploc 1-quart size bags, scissors, and the 1-pound of bacon you just finished cooking.

Step 2.  Hold scissors over bacon for a picture.

Step 3.  Cut all of your bacon strips in half.  They fit better in the Ziploc bag.  Also, you’ll have 2 packages of bacon…you can share one of those packages…

Step 4.  Place half of the bacon on a paper towel.  The paper towel acts as a cushion to keep your perfectly cooked, crunchy bacon from crumbling to bits.

Step 5.  Fold the paper towel over the bacon strips.

Step 6.  Place half of the bacon into your first Ziploc bag.

Step 7.  Do the same for the other half of the bacon.

Step 8.  Be sure to fold the paper towel to a smaller size than the Ziploc baggie you are using.  Make the folded paper towel and bacon fit easily into the Ziploc bag.

Step 9.  Push the air out and seal your Ziploc bag.

Step 10.  Pack your bacon into your cooler or kitchen kit.

Storage During the Trip

I thoroughly cook my bacon.  I wash my hands during prep.  My bacon can last for a weekend with no refrigeration.  If I am traveling with a cooler; then yes, the bacon is going to be refrigerated.

You do what you think is best for storage.  There is no reason to feel uncomfortable with your food storage.  If you sometimes skip taking a cooler with you for short trips, awesome.  If you are Serve Safe Certified and you monitor the exact temperature of your cooler, you are awesome too.
