November 9, 2015 by Jason Clements

44 ways to improve the Kansas City Climbing Community right now…

1. Kick out the constant complainers…and their ringleader
2. Kick out the community agitators
3. Kick out the biggest egos
4. Kick out the mouth breathers
5. Kick out the ones with misplaced energy
6. Kick out the Christians
7. Kick out the gays

Now just the priest and the Irish guy are meeting…

So kick out the alcoholics…

…and now there is no community.

I guess I don’t have to write out the other 37 ways.

Backpacker Puck Flavors

Pumpkin Spice  **LIMITED TIME ONLY:

It’s made with our proprietary blend of spice and has more pumpkin then you’ll know what to do with. It’s made with Jarradale pumpkin and pumpkin seeds to give it that authentic pumpkin flavor. These bars are made with almond butter. That’s right; only almonds go into our almond butter. The pumpkin spice bar is also the only bar in our arsenal that has no chocolate chips. Get them while you can since they’re only around for a limited time.

Cherry Chocolate Made for the Ozark Highlands Trail (OHT),

This is the bar that started it all. Made with dried tart cherries and a specific blend of nuts and other ingredients. If you like almond butter then you’ll love this bar because it’s got a heaping helping of it. This almond butter is made with just one ingredient and that’s almonds. It’s sure to satisfy your hunger on or off the trail.

Peanut Butter Banana

Made with dehydrated bananas, this bar combines everything you love about banana bread and kicks it up a notch by adding real peanut butter. That’s right, only peanuts go into our peanut butter. We just figured you wanted the real taste of peanuts in your peanut butter, so that’s all you get. The chocolate chips compliment the whole product by giving it that extra kick.

Apple Spice

Made with a proprietary blend of spice, this bar will make you want to eat it hot or cold. Watch out for the chunks of real dehydrated granny smith apples. They’re sure to make your mouth water for some apple pie. Let’s not forget about the peanut butter and chocolate chips, which surprisingly complements this one of a kind apple trail bar.

REI’s #OptOutside Marketing Stunt is a Fail

October 27, 2015 by Jason Clements

Support LocalREI’s #OptOutside Marketing Stunt is a Fail

Do you need a megastore telling you to #OptOutside?

REI, with $2.2 BILLION in sales in 2014, is a retail monster. They are in the same class as Worst Buy, Gall-Mart and the rest of their ilk.

So, go ahead, REI, give yourself a high-five.

[Readers, support your local, independent outdoor gear shops.]

Better Strategies for REI:  Making a TRUE Difference in People’s Lives:

  • Donate all profits from Black Friday sales to a charity, homeless shelter, food kitchen, etc.
  • For every coat purchased at full price, REI donates a coat to a homeless shelter.
  • Instead of Toys for Tots barrels at the front of each REI store; have a Hats, Scarves, Gloves, Mittens barrel to collect for those children less fortunate in their respective cities.
  • Have employees take the day off and have option to volunteer at a charity of their choice…and still get paid.
  • Open your new locations 100 miles away from local, independent outdoor gear shops.

Meet Richard Lonski: Rock Climber, Martial Artist, CFO of DGS Games

October 21, 2015 by Jason Clements

Richard Lonski has one of the biggest, kindest, warmest hearts I know. Dude is solid.

Richard started rock climbing when he was in his 40’s and dropped 50 pounds!  Talk about being an inspiration.  He is the CFO of DGS Games.  And, he knows how to kick ass–is one of only a few teachers of a martial art called Shinwa Taido.

Ladies and Gentlemen, meet Richard Lonski.

Meet Richard LonskiGet to know Richard in 15 seconds:

Scariest situation you’ve ever been in – doesn’t have to be climbing related:

• Wow….things got real fast. It was a situation I don’t think I’ve ever told anyone about. I was in high school and was sexually assaulted by a much larger/older co-worker.

[Please, if you or someone you know needs help:  Call 800.656.HOPE (4673)]

If you were only allowed one specific type and brand of alcohol / cocktail for one Richard Lonski Enjoying the Campfireyear, what would you choose?

• Easy….whiskey.  Pretty much all I drink now.  Bourbon or Scotch neat.  There is nothing better on a cold night around a campfire.

What are three things you eat on a regular basis?

• Spinach, hummus and peanut butter

The last good book you read was:

• That’s hard, I don’t read nearly as much as I used to…..so, how about the book that had the most impact on my life. The Tao of Physics by Fritjof Capra. I’ve owned it 3 times and given them all away. Been meaning to buy my 4th copy.

What music or a song you listen to over and over right now?

• While I have about a dozen Pandora stations, I keep coming back to Cake, Walk off the Earth and Billie Holiday depending on my mood.

If space tourism become available in our lifetime, are you going to the Moon or Mars? Why?

• Easy. Mars. I wrote a research paper on the feasibility of colonizing Mars in High school.  I have always been a nerd; and that created a bit of a fascination with the planet and the possibilities it represents.

10 Route Setting Tips for the New Route Setter or Add Psyche To Your Creativity

10 Route Setting Tips For The NEW Route Setter

OR

When You Need To Add Some Psyche To Your Setting Creativity

  • Sit quietly and imagine your last send outside. How did that feel?
  • Look at pictures or vids of yourself sending. Can you reproduce that?
  • Watch videos of the pros climbing outside
  • Watch videos of indoor competitions
  • Watch videos of other gym setters
  • Join Routesetter Anon in Facebook
  • Get out your guidebook and look at pictures of problems you want to climb next
  • On rope? Think about crux sections of ascending routes you’ve sent recently
  • Set out some holds on the ground. Tool around with them on the ground.
  • Link up 2 easy problems that are close to each other

10 Route Setting Tips for the New Route Setter

Sit quietly and image your last send outside. How did that feel?

Many climbers I know, practice some sort of meditation or mindfulness.  The actual step-by-step process of meditation or mindfulness is outside of the scope of this article.

However, you probably can already just chill out in front of a wall in your gym and see the space and envision what might be possible to create right there.  When there are many routes and problems up, can you ‘see’ the empty space where another problem can go?

When the wall is completely blank, I allow a pile of holds to talk to me.  (See Tip #9)

Look at pictures or vids of yourself sending. Can you reproduce that?

Best Hammock for a Beginner Hobo Hammock vs ENO Hammock

October 16, 2015 by Jason Clements

Best Hammock for a Beginner

Which is the best hammock for a beginner?  Hobo Hammock vs. ENO Hammock

I am a tent camper who is also a fan of hammock camping.  However, I really hate bugs–especially in the summer.  I hate mosquitoes, gnats, and grasshoppers.  I’ve had a grasshopper startle me awake–landing on my face.  Nope and double nope!  I need my tent to block out the bugs.  But in early spring or in late fall, when there are no bugs to gang up on me while I sleep, I completely enjoy sleeping in my hammock.

Just so you know my biases*:  I only own an ENO double-wide hammock.  I have slept in it on dozens of climbing trips.  I have strung it up just to sit and chill out.  I even have a special set up in my basement with giant eye-bolts drilled into the joists where I can relax and watch some MMA on a Saturday night.

Eye Bolt for HammockI went to The Outdoor Gear Lab and looked at how they rated hammocks.  To my eyes, all of the specs of those hammocks look about the same.  Yes, all hammocks are different; yet they are all so similar.

There are thousands of hammock reviews online, so I am not going to write about the specs and breakdown each hammock.  My experience suggests that hammock reviews get way too complicated, especially for a climber/camper like myself.  If you disagree, post up your comment telling me why.  I’m far from an expert.
