What does it cost to rock climb in Kansas City?

Rating The Three Best Rock Climbing Gyms In Kansas City On CostPlease note that this graphic DOES NOT include any discounts you receive from club discounts such as Boy Scouts Discounts, Military Discounts, or Kansas City Climbing Club Discounts.

Explanation of Ratings

Ibex receives the highest rating of A in member costs because they offer the best price for a one-year membership during their Annual Membership Sale.  Nobody comes close to that pricing; so Ibex deserves that recognition.

On top of their best pricing, Ibex receives an A in their facility rating.

Monster Mountain received an A- in pricing as they offer the lowest member costs for single day pass; and are in line with Ibex for costs of other membership options.

It is no secret that Monster Mountain is built at the end of a gymnastics facility.  The Wall is the Godfather of indoor climbing walls in Kansas City and has seen some wear and tear.  The B- rating for the Monster Mountain facility reflects some of the limitations of an older facility and general lack of modern rock-wall characteristics.

ROKC received a C+ rating for membership costs.  Most climbers are going to have a rough time wanting to pay a sign up fee; so you should consider taking advantage of the Founding Memberships cost benefits — and quickly.

ROKC also has the highest annualized membership costs.  However, ROKC should have the highest rated facilities score A* once we all get to see it.  Based on their social hype; I expect that we will all be very impressed.

So, if you want the complete climbing, workout, and yoga experience, ROKC is going to be the gym for you. *Please read the Additional Facility Notes for ROKC below. [Read more…] about Rating The Three Best Rock Climbing Gyms In Kansas City On Member Costs

Take A Kind Coffee Break In Estes Park Colorado: Meet Amy Hamrick

February 23, 2016 by Jason Clements

Take A Kind Coffee BreakRight at the intersection of Rocky Mountain National Park and Heaven; there is a little coffee shop in Estes Park called Kind Coffee.

Amy Hamrick is the owner.

Next time you are near RMNP, Colorado; plan to stop and take a Kind Coffee break in Estes Park Colorado.  Or, if you are the type of coffee lover who orders beans online, you can visit the Kind Coffee shop at www.kindcoffee.com.

Amy Hamrick Owner of Kind CoffeeLadies and Gentlemen, please get to know Amy Hamrick:

The last good book I read was:  The Emerald Mile

When I have a day to myself, all I want to do is:  Hike with my dogs.

Coffee goes best with: A homemade pecan roll.

If I could teleport to any mountain peak on Earth and sip my favorite cup of coffee:  Mount Chiripo, Costa Rica and sipping a double shot, whole milk latte with a sprinkle of cinnamon in the shots.

HCRB:  Kind Coffee started as Estes Park Coffee Company in 1998…what made you want to start a coffee company?

Amy:  I have worked in coffee since I was in high school and have a passion for it. More importantly, I enjoy creating a community space where folks gather and meet and learn and hang out.

HCRB:  Kind Coffee is a stalwart of sustainability. What are 4 things that anyone can do, right now, to be better at recycling or sustainability. [Read more…] about Take A Kind Coffee Break In Estes Park Colorado: Meet Amy Hamrick

The Best Videos That Benefit The Kansas City Climbing Community

February 18, 2016 by Jason Clements

The Best Videos That Benefit The Kansas City Climbing Community 02.16Here are the best videos that benefit the Kansas City climbing community.  Take a quick look ESPECIALLY if you are brand new to hiking, climbing, or camping.

I don’t claim to be an expert at anything.  These are the strategies that I use.  I’ve taken what I’ve learned from my own experiences and from talking to dozens of my fellow climbers; and put together these videos.  You will come to discover that some of the best members of your climbing community are always learning new ideas and tips – and improving themselves – and they ultimately share their best-practice ideas.

My way is not necessarily better than another way.  Take what you want.  Skip what doesn’t work for you.  And you can share your best tips in the comments here or on the YouTube videos.

No Loose Chalk

Do you ever see signs posted in your gym that say, “NO LOOSE CHALK.”  What that means is they do no want you to pour your climbing chalk into your chalk bag while at the gym.  Your gym wants you to use a chalk ball.

The employees of your climbing gym have plenty of responsibilities – like keeping you safe (and the new climbers safe) giving beta, fixing spinners, getting your friends some rental gear, etc.  The last thing you want those employees spending time on is cleaning up your chalk spill.

How To Fill Your Chalk Ball The Quick and Easy Way (3:45)

Finger Injuries…Noooooooo!!!

You’ve got to try Voodoo Flossing on your fingers, wrists, elbows, shoulders.  It works on sore forearms and sore calves.  I’ve heard stories of seriously sprained ankles healing in a day or two.  Sure, I am not a doctor; and yes, every body is different.  But the stories I keep hearing give me great pause: “Is this really a tool that everyone should experiment with…”

Here’s How to Voodoo Floss Your Fingers (2:15)

How much did your tent cost?  How much did your sleeping bag cost?

Yeah, those are quite the investment.  And just like all of your climbing gear, you can perform some very simple maintenance on your soft gear (tents, sleeping bags, etc.) to help extend their life.

Here’s How to Store Your Expensive Sleeping Bag (1:09)

Here’s How to Store Your Tent For The Winter (1:45)

Bathroom.  Yes, we have to talk about pooping in the woods.

Depending on where you are going, (ha ha, get it: “going”) you will have to know the rules for managing your waste.  Some climbing places have full facilities – like they have at Horseshoe Canyon Ranch.  Some other climbing destinations only have pit toilets – like at Sam’s Throne.  And some places you are going to have to dig a hole to do your stuff.

Pro Tip:  If you have to dig a hole; dig it at least as deep as your trowel is long.

Here is How I Build My Ultimate Poop / Toilet Kit. (2:25)

If you are a part of the Kansas City climbing community or any other climbing community, thank you for watching.  Please share your tips and ideas in the comment section here or on YouTube.

Enjoy your next adventure!

Meet Beau Belger at Moosejaw on the Plaza

February 17, 2016 by Jason Clements

Meet Beau Belger at Moosejaw on the PlazaI have always maintained that buying gear from your friend’s shops makes it a more enjoyable experience.  Add that degree of trust, and you walk out of the store feeling like you just made a purchase of a lifetime!  So, let’s make some friends:  Meet Beau Belger.

Beau is one of the managers at Moosejaw on the Plaza where he works with Gracey Cockram.

When you meet Beau, ask him about how in the world he enjoys the cold weather!

Ladies and Gentlemen:  Meet Beau Belger.

HCRB:  What is your favorite outdoor activity?

Beau:  My favorite outdoor activity is Outdooring, which I define as the act of being out of doors. I am a big fan of pretty much anything I can do in the great outdoors.

HCRB:  What is your go-to drink in the winter? …after a workout?   …when relaxing?

Beau:  My favorite drink, honestly this answer holds true for all three:  Coffee.

HCRB:  Best book you’ve read in the last year?  …best movie?

Beau:  The best book I read was The First Law trilogy by Joe Abercrombie. I’d say the best movie I saw this year was the Revenant

HCRB:  One place you want to travel to, that you haven’t yet?  …why?

Tierra del Fuego AchipelagoBeau:  I am in the process of formulating a plan to fly into Santiago Chile buy a bike and take 6 months riding through the Andes and some wonderful wine country. Make my way down to Patagonia climb my little heart out find a way onto a fishing vessel that would take me around the Tierra del Fuego archipelago and work my way up the Argentine coast to Buenos Aries.

I think the only “why” question i need to answer here would be why haven’t I done it yet, which I can only answer by saying; school.

HCRB:  Alright, Beau,  why should we stop into Moosejaw to meet you? [Read more…] about Meet Beau Belger at Moosejaw on the Plaza
