Well last time I gave one, I jinxed myself with getting the right permits and missed it.  So, I am not telling anyone a date until I get these last few things taken care of.

Are WOD FITTERS the Best Voodoo Floss Bands for Rock Climbers?

March 31, 2016 by Jason Clements

Are WOD Fitters the best voodoo floss bands for rock climbers?

I have been experimenting with Voodoo Floss for over a year.  I feel very lucky that I have experienced some very positive results from Voodoo Flossing for both *climbing and non-climbing related applications.

  • I’ve healed a torn calf muscle (*non-climbing)
  • Found pain relief and recovery in my fingers (*climbing)
  • Learned how to de-pump in between burns while climbing (*climbing)
  • Reduced DOMS after hard sessions (*both climbing and non-climbing)
  • Helped my daughter recover quickly from a jammed finger (dodge ball) (*non-climbing)
  • Helped a fellow climber recover from a severely sprained ankle (*climbing)
  • Recover and reduce pain from a strained hamstring (*climbing – strained my hammy with an awesome heel hook while sending Planet Earth in Fountain Red)
  • Wrap the band around my waist to alleviate back pain (*non-climbing)
  • * * * Add your Voodoo Floss Band to your crag, bouldering or first aid kit

Are WOD Fitters the Best Voodoo Floss Bands for Rock Climbers ComparisonWOD Fitters Voodoo Floss Band works best for me

Of all three types of Voodoo Floss bands that I have used, the WOD fitters is the best band that gives the best results (for all body parts except the fingers).  You might have a different experience; and if you do, please share in the comments.

Reasons why the WOD Fitters Voodoo Floss Bands work best for me

  • It is big enough to wrap entire arm, hamstrings, waist – it is big
  • I can get that Super Compression that I want
  • It is easy to handle – I can wrap all of me without assistance
  • Affordable

If you are like most climbers, you might want to begin your experimentation with little to no costs.  I was lucky that I had that old rubber raincoat belt.  You might have access to one if you have kids or nieces or nephews.  But what if you don’t have an old raincoat around?  You can always try the Goodwill.  I have no idea if that is a popular item at the Goodwill. Why Are There Goats At Horseshoe Canyon Ranch?

March 30, 2016 by Jason Clements

Why are there Goats at Horseshoe Canyon Ranch HCR kids on a rockWhy are there goats at Horseshoe Canyon Ranch?

The goats do two things:

  1. They manage the landscaping
  2. They are a revenue source for the Ranch

Barry says:

When we bought the property the goats were here along with the cattle that the previous owners ran.

The guy (previous owners) says, “You need goats; they keep the place clean.”

We were like, “Yeah, okay.”  So we bought the goats with the property and kept them a few years…

…and they started getting out; and getting older.  We were like, “You know what — they are a pain!”   “We are just going to sell the goats and get rid of the goats.”

Well, we did just that – we sold them all.

And about 3 or 4 years later, we were like, “We’re losing the ranch!”  The environment was just taking over!

So the goats keep the woods clean, they keep the brush back, they keep the fields clean.  They give the ranch that open kind of feel.

You think you have poison ivy now?  If we didn’t have the goats it would be a giant blackberry and poison ivy brambly mess.  The goats really keep the ranch clean.  Landscaping is their number one purpose.

Secondly, we raise the babies every year and we sell off the production.  It’s a little added cash.Old Man Goat at HCR

How Many Goats Are On The Ranch?

We have about 100 nannies, and they have on average 1.5 kids.  So at the peak of early summer, when the nannies have their babies on them, we probably have 250 goats.  And then, when the production has been sold off,  we have just the 100 nannies.  So between 100 – 250 depending on the time of the year.

Can I Pet The Baby Goats? Why are there goats at Horseshoe Canyon Ranch Baby Kids Baby Goats

Amy, who manages that goat herd, says, “They are cute and look cuddly but please don’t pick up any baby goats you find at the ranch. They may look abandoned but they are not. Goats are a lot like deer and will leave or hide their babies so they can go eat. Mom always returns. She won’t be able to find them if you move them. Some moms won’t take the babies back if you have “cuddled” them all over. If you think they are lost just let an HCR staff know. Thank you. We do appreciate your concern.”

The History Of Horseshoe Canyon Ranch by Barry Johnson

March 15, 2016 by Jason Clements

The History Of Horseshoe Canyon Ranch by Barry Johnson

The History Of Horseshoe Canyon Ranch by Barry Johnson Photo by Lucus MarshallBarry and Amy Johnson 1990 The History of Horseshoe Canyon RanchAmy and I bought the property In 1994.  I was 26 yr old at the time…

…I had decided to make a shift from what I was doing – I was doing financial planning and group insurance for federal and postal employees. I had been doing that for about 3 or 4 years right out of college; and found some success doing it.  It allowed me to have a little bit of money in the bank but I was traveling a lot – too much.  And when my oldest son, Cameron, was born (he is 21 now), I wasn’t willing to continue to pay that price anymore.  That’s when we decided to make that lifestyle switch.…

…so, we had looked for suitable properties to develop for about a year.

We were up in Harrison looking at another piece of property, not too far from here, a larger track about 700 acres.  But the access was poor — about 10 miles on a gravel road — and for other reasons, we didn’t’ feel comfortable with purchasing that property.

But, back at the motel that night, we had picked up one of those real-estate guides that you pick up at the super market, and there was a new listing in there.  It said something along the lines of:

“Beautiful Horseshoe Canyon – 350 acres,  good for cattle, and good for this and that and whatever…”

…we came out that following morning and looked at the property, and knew it was exactly what we were looking for and we offered and accepted that day; and away we went.Welcome to Horseshoe Canyon Ranch The HistoryThere was nothing here when we bought it…

…only a single road down to that old chimney, where we parked our trailers out near the front.  And the previous owner had a pen there, where he gathered his cows.  That was it.

All of the roads and all of the structures; we had to build all of that.

The vision for the layout wasn’t very complicated.  We pictured that we needed a barn; an activity center to base the horse operation out of; and a lodge where people can gather and we can feed every body.  And we knew we needed cabins.

It was just a matter of walking around with stakes and ribbons and saying, “this would be a good spot,” and we just staked it all out and started building.  Most of the cabins were just kinda sketched out in a legal pad.

I had some construction management and finance background that I started in college, so I was comfortable with the construction aspect of the ranch.  We did find a home plan for the lodge that we converted and redrew to fit our need for the commercial building that it is.

We always new that the purpose of buying this property was to develop it into a family guest ranch.  I wanted it to be similar to my experience out west.

But the most important part was that we wanted to build a dude ranch where families could come, reconnect with each other and reconnect with the outdoors.

Chess, Rock Climbing, and 50 Pound Weight Loss Meet James Agnew

March 9, 2016 by Jason Clements

Chess, Rock Climbing, and 50 Pound Weight Loss Meet James Agnew.

James Agnew is a routesetter at The Crag at Earl Bell in Jonesboro, Arkansas.  He is currently studying Philosophy at Arkansas State University.  And when he is not climbing, James is playing chess.

James used rock climbing to lose 50 pounds — I know — impressive (wait when you see his “before” picture below).  He told me that he walked into The Crag and it was relatively fun for him.  He saw that rock climbing was enjoyable enough and he wanted to use it to get in better physical shape.  James says:

I never had a singular epiphany moment, I just had a stupidly strong desire to get better.

James:  The Four Loves by C.S Lewis.

James: About 170.

HCRB: What was your weight when you started climbing 3 years ago?

James: About 220.

HCRB:  What food do you no longer eat (or rarely eat) with your weight loss success?

James: Soda and fast food are almost always a no go, with the exception of a late night stop by Taco Bell after a climbing trip.

HCRB:  Would you rather travel into space (set foot on the Moon or Mars) or become a meditation master (understand the deepest part of the inside of you)?  Why?

James: Moon or Mars, because I have a strong desire to explore new areas.

Dr. Lisa Erikson’s Notes On Voodoo Flossing For Rock Climbers

March 8, 2016 by Jason Clements

Dr. Lisa Erikson's Notes On Voodoo Flossing For Rock ClimbersDr. Lisa Erikson’s Notes On Voodoo Flossing For Rock Climbers.

***Please Note:  I am Jason Clements and I am not a doctor nor a physical therapist.  I write about my outdoor experiences.  I believe in self-care, self-experimentation, and problem solving.  IF YOU ARE INJURED, go see your doctor.  Don’t be an idiot — a phrase that Dr. Lisa and I both agree upon.

I am going to make a gigantic claim about Voodoo Flossing at the end of this article…

But First, What Does The Doctor Say?  Enter Dr. Lisa Erikson

An avid mulitsport athlete, Dr. Lisa competed in collegiate running, cycling, and nordic skiing. A trail runner, ultrarunner, climber, and nordic skier, Dr. Lisa is a Palmer-West College of Chiropractic Alumni with a specialization in Sports Chiropractic and Chiropractic Biomechanics of Posture. She also has a BS in Cellular Biology and Neuroscience from MSU-Bozeman and additional X-ray Diagnostic training. The medical provider for USAClimbing from 2009 to present, she has written a book on climbing injuries and devoted herself to the elimination of injuries compiled by missing self-care and abnormal loading patterns.

Dr. Lisa Erikson is the author of Climbing Injuries Solved.  She is the doctor who has treated some of the top climbers in the world:  Dave Graham, Daniel Woods, Angie Payne.

Dr. Lisa commented on my Video titled “Why Every Climber Should Experiment With Voodoo Flossing.”

Great video Jason. I have gotten a bunch of questions about your video in office so I thought I’d clarify ONE thing-

Readers- Just as a heads up (because I get TONS of this question in office), Voodoo flossing is for adhesions between the skin, muscle, tendons and connective tissue.

Think of a popcorn ball of scar tissue or a piece of bubble gum between the different tissues that binds them abnormally together. This is what Voodoo flossing rips up!

These adhesions limit the amount of motion that occurs under the skin because everything is stuck together, especially after long term swelling or inflammation as we see in our favorite sport.

Great video and fabulous for this region…

     1. Voodoo flossing does NOT decrease muscle tone (or hasn’t been shown to yet) and is NOT for tendonitis of the forearm or finger…

     2. Voodoo flossing IS for lost range of motion or for treatment of reduction of these ranges of motion.

     3. A few treatments should do it, this doesn’t need to be a weekly treatment as once these adhesions are ripped up, you have to earn them back.

Thanks for putting this out there Jason, knowledge is power! -Dr. Lisa
