HCRBeta Supports Horseshoe Canyon Ranch Price Increases

July 15, 2016 by Jason Clements

IRuthie Bouldering at HCR talked to Barry Johnson about his decision to raise the Day Use Fee at Horseshoe Canyon Ranch.  He is allowing me to break this news.

IMPORTANT:  Be sure to read all the way to the bottom of this article as you’ll find out how Barry continues to extend his generosity by offering a discount for the Season Pass.

DETAILS:  Beginning August 1, 2016 the Day Use Pass at Horseshoe Canyon Ranch will increase to $10 per day.  The Season Pass will increase to $100 (good for 1 year from date of purchase.  The Camping Fee remains $5 per night.

  1. The price increase is “not (to make) more money necessarily; but to manage the resources more carefully.”
  2. “And, to be quite honest, lessen the impact and provide an even better experience for the community.”

I fully support the price increase.

Barry and his family have shared their piece of heaven with the climbing community and has not raised the prices to climb for 15 years.

Since I’ve started climbing at Horseshoe Canyon Ranch in 2007, Barry has added:

  • The super convenient bathrooms and showers
  • The impressive pavilion with electrical outlets to charge my phone
  • Jason and Morgan continue to bolt new routes and maintain all of the hardware and fixed gear
  • They’ve added the coffee shop inside of the Trading Post

All of these improvements have made Horseshoe Canyon Ranch a world-class destination for climbing and relaxing.

I hope you will agree:  I am willing to pay more for climbing at HCR without a single thought of complaining.

Anna Mike and Jason at Horseshoe Canyon Ranch I did ask Barry if there was anything that we, as climbers and campers, could do better for the ranch right now.  Barry said:

  1. Sign in and pay your fees
  2. Pick up your trash
  3. Be a good citizen – a good neighbor.  Be considerate of other people.
  4. Don’t be shy – watch out for your fellow climbers.  Watch out for the ranch.  If somebody is not wearing a wristband, chances are they have not signed off on their waiver.  Well, that is a threat to everyone’s access. It is okay to say, “I’ve noticed you’re not wearing a wristband…”
  5. Please be considerate.  Please be respectful.  Please obey the rules.

How To Repair A Cracked ProHands Hand Exerciser

May 4, 2016 by Jason Clements

Repair A Cracked Prohands hand exerciser

How To Repair A Cracked ProHands Hand Exerciser

The best warm up tool I have is the Prohands hand exerciser by Grip Master.  Almost every boulderer I know has one of these or something similar to it.

This is the second Prohands Pro (heavy tension) that has cracked on me.  Both of mine have cracked in the same manner, so I decided to take to look to find out if it was repairable.

The Answer Is Yes

Yes, the Prohands hand exerciser was repairable; and it was worth the time to fix it.

As you watch the video, you will notice that I call it “busted and unrepairable” around the 5:15 mark.  However, while I was gathering up everything to clean up and throw it away, I made a DISCOVERY (at 5:35 of the video) that lead me to fixing it.  Here is the video; and the Step By Step is below.

Five Of The Best Ways To Support Your Climbing Community

April 26, 2016 by Jason Clements

Optimists make themselves an easy target for luck to find”- Scott Adams.  Creator of Dilbert and author of How to Fail at Almost Everything and Still Win Big.

Support Your Climbing Community

  1. Buy From Them

  2. Write About Them

  3. Make a Video About Them

  4. Leave a Comment on Their Website

  5. Social Media

Being an entrepreneur is hard work.  Starting your own business can be nerve wracking and scary.  Letting people read what you write can be intimidating.  And then, the financial aspect can be rough, too.  However, entrepreneurs know that all that stress and hardship is worth the effort.  The freedom and fulfillment on the other side is like no other.

I get it:  Every one who starts a business has an idea to change the world, do something they love, or just get out of a job they hate.  And sure, there are many other reasons…

…but one thing is clear: none of us will be successful without support, without customers, or without fans.

So, how do we support each other in a concrete manner?  How do you support your climbing community?  Is it possible that we can help someone make it, get famous, make that important connection, become viral, or just pay next month’s bills?  Can we create luck?

Here are five of the best ways to support your Climbing Community.

1. Buy From Them

This is the big one.  This may be the only important point of this article.  If you think someone has a cool or worthwhile product or service; spend your money with them.  If you can’t spend your money because it just isn’t something that you want or need, then keep reading – there are more ways to lend your support.

I like to use the phrase “I vote with my dollars.”  If you like a product or service, shop there.  If you don’t, then don’t.  It really is that simple.  I enjoy Backpacker Pucks, so I buy them.  I think the guys and gals at Moosejaw are great people, so I buy from them. ClimbOn is an excellent product and an excellent company; I’ve bought from them for about 10 years. [Read more…] about Five Of The Best Ways To Support Your Climbing Community

Voodoo Floss for Sprained Ankles: Rock Climber Brant Hysell Shares Details

April 25, 2016 by Jason Clements

Voodoo Floss For Sprained Ankles Brant Hysell Shares his DetailsIn one of the coolest, random meetings I’ve ever had at Horseshoe Canyon Ranch, I ended up discovering just how quickly a Voodoo Floss session can help in an emergency situation – specifically using voodoo floss for sprained ankles.  [Be Advised: HCRBeta and Jason Clements offers no medical nor diagnostic services. In an emergency, call 911 or your doctor.]

After the first wrap it started to feel better. – Brant Hysell

We were a group of about 10 or 12 boulderers at the Loaf Boulder in Horseshoe Canyon ranch. We all just sent the classic 4-star boulder called Dig Dug. And up through the trail walks a guy with, what I thought, was a soft cast on his ankle. I thought to myself, “What a Bad Ass! Dude is out here climbing with a broken ankle.” I’ve always had a deep appreciation for anyone who pushes themselves through a difficulty.

I approached this bad-ass rock climber and asked him what happened…

Ladies and Gentlemen, meet Brant Hysell.

ClimbSkin Review Pros and Cons [Pictures and Proof]

April 14, 2016 by Jason Clements

The ClimbSkin Review Pros and ConsI enjoy rock climbing, and more specifically, I enjoy bouldering.  Every sesh, I want to improve.  I want an edge.  I want my skin healthy and strong so that my skin is not limiting my improvements.

So when my friend, Richard Lonski told me that he completed a birthday challenge that included something like a hundred laps – and he did NOT destroy his hands – because he used Friction Labs ClimbSkin, that got my attention.

Just so you know my biases, I have an affiliate account with Frictions Labs.  They make excellent chalk – it is worth trying if you are serious about improving your climbing.  You might like it; you might not.  That’s okay.

Keah Kalantari is one of the Founders at Frictions Labs – he shipped me a container of ClimbSkin at no cost to me.  He didn’t request a review in return for the ClimbSkin.  I did this experiment with ClimbSkin of my own accord.

ClimbSkin Review Pros and Cons: Here is My Experience

Pros:

  • ClimbSkin really works.  An Example:  I spent 6 hours working on a horizontal roof problem with little skin damage and nearly no skin soreness afterwards.
  • You only use a little bit with each application.  It should last many months for the average climber who climbs 3 to 4 times per week.
  • Friction Labs offers a 100% satisfaction guarantee
  • Many, many testimonials of real, satisfied customers
  • Solid owner, solid team behind it
  • You don’t need to be a climber to benefit from ClimbSkin

Testimonial from a Nurse I know through THE Climbing Community

ClimbSkin Testimonial from a NurseCons:

  • Chemicals in the ingredients
  • On sale ClimbSkin costs $20 per ounce
  • Your skin might become too callused (You must add an emery board to your kit.)
  • The label states:  Topic[al] Use Only

ClimbSkin By Friction Labs Review Their Labeling is Stupid

April 12, 2016 by Jason Clements

ClimbSkin By Frictions Labs Review*** UPDATE 4-12-16  …and just like that, Friction Labs have the information on their website updated so that the ingredients listed online match the ingredients listed on the container.

I think I’ll turn this article into a “How Excellent Companies Respond To Criticism” or something like that…

ClimbSkin By Friction Labs Review – Their Labeling is Stupid

I received a container of ClimbSkin from Friction Labs at no cost to me.  There was no request from them for me to review it.  I don’t owe them anything; but part of what I do here at HCRBeta is support entrepreneurs and small businesses.

When I wrote about Friction Labs chalk, I gushed.  It is excellent chalk.  It is a little pricey, too.  However, one principle that I have learned is that the best customers are the ones who recognize the value of expertise.  You don’t have to market to people who consider cheapness a desirable quality.

I’ve got 2 things to say about ClimbSkin:

  1. ClimbSkin is Awesome.  It Works Like a Magic Glove That Gives You +10 Protection For Your Skin
  2. ClimbSkin’s Labeling is Stupid.  It Will Make Many Consumers Angry (Maybe F.L. didn’t realize there is a big difference in their web language and the actual label.)

Let me get the critical out of the way.  Once they fix their labeling, this article goes away.  So the “ClimbSkin is Awesome” portion of this review is going to be here: (_____).

ClimbSkin Ingredients Labeling

I deserve, as do all consumers, to know what the ingredients are in a product; especially a product that is going to be absorbed into my skin and into my body.

Using the phrase “…just natural ingredients…” is a stupid mistake by ClimbSkin’s marketing team.  Every smart consumer knows that “natural” means nothing.
