Meet Matt Boulton Inventor Of The Backpacker Puck

August 3, 2015 by Jason Clements

You have read the review of the Backpacker Puck.  And now the inventor, Master Chef, and good vibes promoter, Matt Boulton, has answered a few more questions about the world famous Backpacker Pucks.

Matt: At this time I’m unsure if there is organic labeling for the ingredients in the pucks. I source all of my bulk items from Sprouts Market in Overland Park, Kansas.  My honey is sourced from a local beekeeper in Merriam called Speckman Honey.  As I grow the business I plan to purchase land where I can grow most if not all of the ingredients that are in the bars. Here are the nutritional labels for the Chocolate Cherry and the Peanut Butter Banana:

HCRB: There are no preservatives, so how long can you store them?  Dry cupboard or refrigerator or freezer?

Matt: Generally what I will tell people is that if they order a large number, typically 25 or more,  they should freeze the pucks so they will keep as long as they need them. I have however kept the pucks in a dry place for as long as 6 months with no ill effects.  The truth is, however, that I really don’t know how long they last.  Every time a new flavor is made I will typically keep one to test for longevity on the product.

HCRB: What is the most popular flavor right now?

Matt: The most popular flavor at the moment is still the original Chocolate Cherry. I think a close second would probably be the Pumpkin spice but I will have to look deeper into that since that flavor is only available during the fall months starting in September and ending in November.

HCRB:  Where can we order Backpacker Pucks right now?

Matt:  Go to www.backpackerpucks.com and Click on the Buy Pucks Now button.

HCRB: Besides Backpacker Pucks, what are your must-have foods for any hiking or climbing trip?

Matt: On any backpacking trip I will generally take some pistachios, some triscuts, gotta throw the peanut butter m&m’s in there also. I’ll also bring along some good conversation and some laugh.  Since most of my time is taken with backpacking I have little time for climbing.  However if i do find myself busting out some sweet routes along the trail or just while car camping somewhere I’ll have most of those items with me.

HCRB: What is the most beautiful place you have hiked or camped? Describe it…

Matt: Hmmmmm. That’s tough since I’ve only been to a few places here in the states. Generally you’ll find me in the hills of Arkansas. Some of my favorite times were spent in Canyonlands, Utah. Every time I go there I am in awe at what i see. I know it’s not a description but words would do no justice to the splendor of any outdoor place. It is truly better to experience places yourself.

Canyonlands UtahHCRB: What are the 5 things (besides food) that you take on each outdoor trip?

Matt: 1. Sweet Helinox Chair 2. water filter 3. knife 4. good conversation 5. headlamp

HCRB: What 3 quick suggestions do you have for a new hiker or climber?

Matt: 1. Don’t…..ever….give….up. Though it may seem hard right now it surely will get easier. 2. Bringing a great attitude will get you through any situation. 3. You’re not lost it just took you longer to get there

HCRB: When you are not hiking or climbing, what do you do to relax?Matt Boulton Relaxing

Matt: I lounge around the house thinking about next adventure.

HCRB: What is your Favorite Outdoor/Hiking Website?

Matt: HikingtheOzarks.com

HCRB:  What was your scariest adventure ever? What did you learn?

Matt:  There was this one time when I was almost attacked by a bear. It’s a very long story but it has to do with the Ozark Highlands Trail. I learned that I was able to keep cool in a tense situation.
