When I have a day to myself, all I want to do is: Hike with my dogs.
Coffee goes best with: A homemade pecan roll.
If I could teleport to any mountain peak on Earth and sip my favorite cup of coffee: Mount Chiripo, Costa Rica and sipping a double shot, whole milk latte with a sprinkle of cinnamon in the shots.
HCRB: Kind Coffee started as Estes Park Coffee Company in 1998…what made you want to start a coffee company?
Amy: I have worked in coffee since I was in high school and have a passion for it. More importantly, I enjoy creating a community space where folks gather and meet and learn and hang out.
HCRB: Kind Coffee is a stalwart of sustainability. What are 4 things that anyone can do, right now, to be better at recycling or sustainability.
- Carry a reusable bottle/mug. Quit buying bottled water.
- Take a moment to think if something is recyclable before you just toss it in the trash.
- Seek out companies that work hard to be sustainable. The more people doing it, the more impactful.
- Choose to do it. Even if it’s hard.
HCRB: What is the best part of being a business owner in Estes Park?
Amy: Having created a popular, comfortable space, we see so many faces, both locals and visitors. Sometimes more than one time in a day. The connection to this community is such a fun part of my day.
HCRB: What is a business lesson you’ve had to learn the hard way?
Amy: I cannot be right all the time. A decision or choice I made in the past, for good reason (or not) may need to be changed/undone/rethought. It’s okay to change. It’s stubborn to keep doing something the way you are doing it just because “that’s how it’s always been done.”
HCRB: What is the most rewarding experience you’ve had as a business owner in Estes Park?
Amy: The amazing team of people I have had the pleasure to employ over these years. Coffee shops attract such a breath of characters, and it’s been amazing to see people stay around a while, then go on and take the next steps in their lives.
HCRB: What advice do you have for a young entrepreneur?
Amy: Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. And, more times than not, you need to make decisions with your gut feelings.
HCRB: What was the hardest part of dealing with the flood of 2013? (I saw that video of the river flooding your store…WOW!)
Amy: Of course the financial burden and work to rebuild the shop were hard, HARD work. But I think dealing with the missing part of our community (our entire corner of businesses were closed for 3 months) was emotionally hard. It was also rewarding, as it reinforced the importance of our space and place in this town.
HCRB: Do you feel that Estes is 100% recovered? Who still needs help?
Amy: I think we are close. I know there are still people dealing with temporary utilities and road construction, and I’m sure the gambit of things that are unfinished or just simply gone. But our community of residents and business owners, I think, have more or less been able to acknowledge the flood, and put it behind us. We will never recoup the loss, but we can recover and more on.
HCRB: Is the Flood Mud still available for purchase?
Amy: Yes. It’s been such a popular coffee we haven’t let it go yet. When we were closed we sold it for $20/lb and donated $5/lb to our local Flood Relief. We have reverted it back to a regularly priced pound of coffee now. It’s part of our offerings and history. And, it’s “dam good coffee.”
HCRB: What is your favorite outdoor activity?
Amy: Hiking
HCRB: Give some beta (advice) to folks traveling into Estes from Kansas…what is the best day and time of day to stroll downtown Estes Park?
Amy: Thursday around 11am in September. Not too many people, but enough for it be lively. Bluebird skies. Maybe a little snow on the peaks.
HCRB: The one place in Estes, that the tourist miss, that you must visit?
Amy: The RiverWalk behind our shop. So many people don’t know that you can park at our Town Visitor Center (just East of KIND Coffee) and walk into town on the Riverwalk behind the stores. It’s magical.
HCRB: How do you avoid the crowds at RMNP?
Amy: Go REALLY early in the morning or during the week, especially in our shoulder seasons.
HCRB: Best place to have lunch in Estes? Dinner?
Amy: Lunch- Ed’s Cantina
Amy: Dinner- The Dunraven Inn
HCRB: Give us some secret tips on preparing…The best cup of coffee in the morning…

HCRB: Give us some secret tips on preparing…The best cold brew ever…
Amy: …using the right blend. Seek out a coffee that the roaster has designed specifically for cold brew.
HCRB: Everyone can be a little better at relaxing by…
Amy: …taking a deep mountain breath and looking at the sky and taking it in.
