I’ve interviewed many rock climbers and outdoor enthusiasts. I ask serious question and I ask silly questions. I frequently ask them, “What is the last good book you have read?”
The answers vary widely. Some read fiction and others read non-fiction. You’ll see at the end of this article, that book list is as eclectic as the climbers themselves. It makes me appreciate them even more.

What about you? Are you thinking about starting your own business? Have you started, but things are not quite yet going as smoothly as you like? Do you need a power boost? How’s life? Is there some shit hitting the fan right now? Are you thriving?
Do you need a little BETA?
Here is my list of the best books for rock climbers who want to become entrepreneurs, start their own business, improve their current business. Even if you don’t have your own business; but just want to improve some part of your life, take a look at these books:
Gorilla Mindset by Mike Cernovich
This is a book about getting your mindset right. This books is about controlling how you talk to yourself. This book is about getting out of a rut and about remembering what it is like to live with vibrancy, flexibility, strength, and brawn.
Shit is going to hit the fan in your business (or life). Guaranteed. In some form or another, you will have a situation that makes you lose sleep, or drink more alcohol, or get on anti-depressants. Take a breath. It is going to be okay.
If you already have a strong mind, and are an oak tree when it comes to difficulties, then you may not need this book.
I wrote about Gorilla Mindset at length in my Battling Depression article. I refer to this book almost daily. I review and edit my worksheet answers almost daily. This is virtual coaching for life and business. If you can only afford one book from this list, get this one.
How to Fail at Everything and Still Win Big: The Kind of Story of My Life by Scott Adams
This was a page turner for me. I admit that I am not an avid reader of Dilbert, but I have read it the past. I do catch a Dilbert comic here and there. And it was, in fact, Mike Cernovich’s suggestion to read Scott Adams. So I checked out the ebook version from my library and read it in two nights.
You could reference this book throughout your entire working day. It is completely full of ideas and strategies to help you thrive when things are going well and to help you overcome when things are going to shit.
This book takes you all over the place: art, mystery illnesses, psychology and hypnosis, luck, hard work, diet.
Choose Yourself by James Altucher
Life Changing. Following James on Facebook or Twitter is exactly like getting a hug from a business mentor who truly loves you and cares for you.
But don’t mistake his gentleness and easy going style for some sort of soft, grandmotherly love. Nope, James cuts the unnecessary shit out of his life with the sharpest knife he can find…and encourages you to do the same.
The book isn’t only about cutting out the shit and baggage and waste and regret out of your mind, it is about choosing yourself. Think about that for a minute.
James writes about his past personal and business failures and how he overcame all of it – with nothing hidden and no sugar coating. I’ve been reading this book most nights if I have some heaviness on my mind.
And Here Are The Books Your Fellow Climbers Are Reading:
- Matt Boulton – The Child Thief by Brom
- Louis McConnell – The Man Who Quit Money by Mark Sundeen
- Jake Andersen – “Start Something That Matters” by Blake Mycoskie
- Richard Lonski – The Tao of Physics by Fritjof Capra
- Kevin Brown – The 4-Hour Workweek by Timothy Ferriss
- Josh Helke –
- Amanda Smith – Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas by Hunter S. Thompson
- Craig Muderlak – 1) “Wind Up Bird Chronicles – by Haruki Murakami 2) Cadillac Desert – by Mark Reisner 3) James and the Giant Peach – by Roald Dahl
- Chris Deulen – A Manual for Creating Atheists by Peter Boghossian and The Myth of the Spoiled Child by Alfie Kohn and The Lean Startup by Eric Ries
- David Tindle – Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill and Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams
- The best fiction I have read recently was The Martian by Andy Weir and All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr
