In this article, you will learn how to quickly and easily build the ultimate toilet kit for your next outdoor adventure.  This toilet kit works for hiking, climbing, or camping.

I don’t trust most gas station or rest stop facilities, so I always bring my toilet kit with me.  That commercial 1-ply is the worst.  And who knows if there will be soap in that bathroom.  I would rather be comfortably clean than stranded and stinky.  Let’s get down to business.

The Ultimate Toilet Kit Contains

• Your favorite Toilet Paper
• Your favorite Wipes
• A trowel or shovel
• A bag or pouch of some kind to contain it all
• Optional * Hand Sanitizer or Feminine Products

 

Toilet Paper

There is never a reason to buy the cheapest toilet paper for your trips.  Buy what you use in your home.  If something doesn’t go quite right with your diet or you ate too many cheap power bars, you’ll want the good stuff to keep you clean and tidy.

Wipes

If you don’t use wipes for your outdoor adventures, you should add them immediately.  They are so versatile, you will end up using them outside of the bathroom.  Clean yourself up before you snack.  Wipe your arms or legs if you brushed against poison ivy.  After a hard sweaty day, it feels good just to clean the sweat and grime off of your face.

Find the wipes that suit you.  If you want biodegradable, get those.  If you want thick and sturdy, buy the Kirkland brand.

The Kirkland brand is crisp and clean.  It doesn’t fall apart while you use it.  Test your wipes by rolling it vigorously in your hands.  If it starts to fall apart pretty quickly and leaves little bits of white fuzz in your hands, that means its gonna leave bits of the wipe on your butt.  That’s less than ideal.  Find a brand that works for you.

Wipes don’t decompose as quickly as toilet paper, so you may want to review your personal leave-no-trace rules.  If you decide to pack out your wipes, it is as easy as adding another ziplock baggie to your toilet kit.

Trowel or Shovel

When you know that you will be far away from any pit toilets or fully functional facilities, you have to bring a trowel or shovel.  The rule of thumb is to bury your waste as 6 – 8 inches deep, which is usually the length of your trowel.

Your Toilet Kit Container

I prefer to use my old harness bag to contain my Ultimate Toilet Kit.  You could even use a gallon size ziplock bag if you prefer.  For those who want a little more discrete container, opt for an Eagle Creek brand Pack-It Sac.

Optional Hand Sanitizer and Feminine Products

I don’t use hand sanitizer because I have wipes in my kit.  You might be the person who uses hand sanitizer after a trip to the toilet.  Just add your travel size bottle to your toilet kit and you are set.
