Purchase some of the World’s best climbing chalk at The Friction Labs Store.

Pros:

  • Friction Labs Climbing Chalk (F.L.) does climbing chalk the right way.
  • F.L. is significantly better than the “Wal-Mart-style” cheap chalks; and a solid degree better than, what I believe was the premiere brand of chalk, Bison.
  • F.L. is stickier and lasts longer on your hands for multiple burns.
  • F.L. has the science to back up their claims.
  • F.L. has a robust website that will answer all of your questions.
  • F.L. has 3 different blends to choose from: Bam Bam, Gorilla Grip, Unicorn Dust
  • F.L. has a very convenient auto-ship service.
  • F.L. creates a relationship with their fans.
  • F.L. can be used in your regular workouts with dumbbells, kettlebells, etc.

Cons:

  • You will pay more for a quality product.
  • I don’t like the wording of their guarantee.  But I am certain that if you don’t act like a complete grocery bag, and you happen to be the 1 out of 1,000,000 people who may not like the F.L. chalk, their customer service will probably treat you right.

A Little Background on My Opinion – I Have Been a Bison Chalk Snob

I am a chalk snob in the same way that I am a beer snob.  Bud Light just doesn’t taste like anything I want to put in my mouth.  Gross!  Give me a Boulevard Tank 7 and I can taste the fruit tanginess and full flavor and the long crisp finish.  Pair that Tank 7 with any pizza and I am in Heaven.

Evolv Chalk made in China
Evolv Chalk made in China

Yeah, I’ve tried all the Wal-Mart-style cheap chalks like Metolius, Evolv, Black Diamond.  Those are just entry-level chalks.  Plain and simple.  You can burn through a brick or container of that cheap stuff in a busy weekend.  All of those are gritty and you just about have to chalk up after every single move.  You really get what you pay for with those brands…not much besides the basic idea of chalk to keep your hands dry.

Moving on to Bison

Bison chalk was introduced to me by a strong bouldering buddy of mine.  When I put my hand inside his chalk bucket and touched that Bison chalk for the first time, I fell in love.  I think I may have even coined the phrase:  “Once you go Bison, you never go back.”  [Hey Bison Designs:  You can use that if you credit back to me.]

I have purchased only Bison for about 5 years.  I purchase in bulk.  I give it to friends.  It is good stuff.  I like my performance with it.  I thought I would never buy another chalk until Kevin Brown from Friction Labs was very kind to ship me a free sample of all three of Friction Labs climbing chalk blends.

Friction Labs Climbing Chalk

Unicorns, Gorillas, and Bam Bams, Oh, My!

First things first.  Friction Labs chalk feels awesome.  To me, it feels better than Bison.  It is silky smooth and I can see and feel it get inside of every single fold and print on my fingers and palms.  It coats my hands thoroughly and stays on my hands through at least two burns…usually longer.  To my hands, I do feel a degree of improved friction with the Friction Labs chalk compared to my Bison.  I am impressed.

How I Tested Friction Labs Climbing Chalk At The Gym

At my gym, I set up different chalk bags with the 3 different Friction Labs chalks and the Bison as my baseline.  I climbed laps and used a different chalk each burn.  It was easy for me to feel the difference between the Friction Labs and the Bison chalks.  What was most surprising was that my fingers can not differentiate among the three blends of Friction Labs chalks after I worked the chalk into my hands and climbed.  I tried and tired to feel a difference, but I could not.  The Unicorn Dust definitely feels different when I initially touch the chalk.  I don’t know if that is a positive or negative, it was just my experience.  I can tell that Friction Labs feels better or stickier or frictionyer (more frictiony?) than Bison by a degree.  I can tell that Friction Labs feels significantly better than the Evolv that I have in my house for working out on the pull up bar.

How I Tested Friction Labs Chalk At Home

Pull ups, baby.  I use my climbing chalk in my garage pull up bar.  I can do multiple sets of pull ups with just one dose of Friction Labs chalk.  Even with Bison, I would chalk up each time.  Friction Labs chalk kept my hands dry and made it easy to stay on the bar.  Sweaty hands were not the failure point on my pull up sets.  This stuff is good for workouts at home on your pull up bars, barbells, dumbbells, kettlebells.  Keep some at home.

Support The Climbing Community

There is no reason to consistently purchase the cheapest chalks you see in your gear shops or online.  Why?  Well, do you buy the cheapest climbing shoe or the shoe that fits you best and works best for you?  Do you buy the cheapest harness or the harness that fits you best?  Do you buy the cheapest sleeping pad?  Do you buy the cheapest helmet?  Come on!  Friction Labs makes a quality product that commands a higher price.  And, you will get what you pay for.

[…] When I wrote about Friction Labs chalk, I gushed.  It is excellent chalk.  It is a little pricey, too.  However, one principle that I have learned is that the best customers are the ones who recognize the value of expertise.  You don’t have to market to people who consider cheapness a desirable quality.
